Priory Church of St Peter Joins in The Olympic fun
The Priory Church of St Peter will be holding a Spring Fair as part of the Dunstable Olympic Fun Day and this year all stalls will be housed in the historic church building.
The event will take place on Saturday 19th May 2012 between 11am and 2pm. There will be plenty of fun for the whole familywith stalls including jewellery, plants and cakes. Refreshments including lunches will also be served from the churches new kitchen area. In additionthere will be a raffle with fantastic prizes including a hamper. We look forward to seeing you there!
Welcome to the web-pages of The Priory Church of St Peter’s, the Anglican (Church of England) church in the centre of Dunstable.
The church, which is open daily from 9.00 am – 4.00 pm, has always been and still is at the heart and centre of Dunstable. The building of the Priory began in 1132. In its heyday it was of cathedral proportions, serving a large Augustinian community. After the dissolution of the monasteries all except the original nave was lost, and its height was also reduced by one third. Even so it is a large and impressive building, full of history.
Along with St Augustine’s, Fremund’s and St Katherine’s, the Priory Church is part of the Dunstable Team Parish, which covers the whole town. To see where we are on the map, click here.
We are part of The Diocese of St. Albans, which is part of The Church of England.
Music is very important at the Priory. The leadership of the music department comprises a Director of Music, an Assistant Director of Music (who are both organists) and a Director of the Priory Girls Choir. The choirs have a 'cathedral' repertoire. There is an anthem at each service, and at Evensong the canticles are almost always sung to a choral setting. The Eucharists in ordinary time are usually a mixture of choral and congregational settings, reflecting the 'family' nature of the worship.
Situated where it is, and because of its central place in the history of the town, the Priory has a civic dimension in its work, being used for town, district and county events. It is also used from time to time for concerts. Adjacent to the church is the church hall, used for both church activities and public lettings. On High Street South, a short walk from the Priory, is Chew’s House, which houses the Priory Office, with a part time administrator, and other meeting rooms.
